Tasmanian Kombu, Strap weed or Lessonia corrugata is an endemic seaweed ie. the alga is only found in Tasmania. It is found in the high energy upper subtidal zone. Kai Ho are the sole traders for this alga and have access to a very limited supply to trial markets.
If the trials of marketing the alga are successful, an ongoing strategy will be formulated to minimize impacts or even augment current Tasmanian Lessonia stocks. This may be achieved through culture.
This alga is a good substitute for the Japanese Kombu.
